A straight stairlift is for stairs that run in one line from bottom to top, with no turns or landings part-way up. It’s the most common type of stairlift, the lowest in price and the quickest to fit.
We start with a free home survey, usually the same day or the next. We measure your stairs, recommend the right lift and give you a written quote. Once you’re happy, we can often fit a straight stairlift the next day. Most installs take a few hours.
We cover Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.
How much does a straight stairlift cost?
A new straight stairlift costs £3,500 to £4,900 or more. A reconditioned one costs £2,000 to £3,500 or more. Both include fitting. Your exact price is confirmed in a written quote after the free survey.
Prices include fitting and exclude VAT.
Most of our customers with a disability qualify for VAT relief and pay no VAT.
What affects the price
- whether you choose a new or reconditioned lift
- the length of your staircase
- extras, such as a powered swivel seat, a powered footrest or a folding rail
What’s included
- a free home survey and written quote
- fitting by our own engineers, never subcontractors
- a demonstration of how to use the lift before we leave
- a five-year warranty on new lifts, and one to two years on reconditioned lifts, depending on the make
The Homeglide, our main straight stairlift
Our main straight lift is the Homeglide, made by our main supplier, Access BDD. Many people know the range by its earlier name, Thyssenkrupp. We’re an approved Access BDD installer.
We offer the full range: the latest model new or reconditioned, and earlier Homeglide models reconditioned. The latest model has:
- joystick control that needs very little effort
- seatbelt, plus safety edges that stop the lift if something is in the way
- battery power, so it still works in a power cut
- remote handsets to call it to the top or bottom of the stairs
The Homeglide Extra adds a powered swivel seat and a powered footrest. The seat turns to face the landing at the top of the stairs, which makes getting off easier.
Will a straight stairlift fit your stairs?
A stairlift can be fitted to almost any straight staircase, including narrow ones. We check the width, length and angle of your stairs at the free survey.
Stairlifts for narrow stairs
The latest Homeglide fits stairs as narrow as 740mm. The rail fixes to the stairs, not the wall, and the lift folds to 385mm when it isn’t in use, so there’s room for everyone else.
If a door or hallway is close to the bottom step, we can fit a folding rail. The bottom section folds up out of the way while the lift is parked at the top.
Stairlift weight limits
The latest Homeglide carries up to:
- 25 stone (160kg) on most staircases
- 22 stone (145kg) with a folding rail
- 21 stone (136kg) on very steep stairs
Stairs with a turn or a half-landing need a curved stairlift. If your stairs have a landing in the middle, two straight lifts can sometimes cost less than one curved lift. We’ll tell you if that’s an option at your survey.

Reconditioned straight stairlifts
A reconditioned stairlift is a used lift that has been refurbished and prepared for a new home. It costs less than new, and our own engineers fit it in the same way as a new lift.
Our reconditioned straight lifts include Brooks and Homeglide models. Every one is fully checked, tested and refurbished before it leaves us, with worn parts replaced. It usually goes on a reconditioned rail, or a new one if you prefer.
Reconditioned lifts come with our own warranty of one to two years, depending on the make.
